A Poem for Pat
By Mary Tallent Stewart, his aunt
And so, upon a frosty October morn,
an angelic child was born;
To a clan of people who loved him so,
and for so many years watched him grow.
Who knew the path for this angelic child?
Who knew his soul and heart would run wild?
He tested us all a time or two,
and pushed the limit until we knew,
Where the strength of this child had really come;
he just walked to the beat of a different drum.
God’s creations he loved, the woods, the streams.
To hunt and fish were this child’s dreams.
and, as he grew his world would expand,
His Clan taught him to love the land.
A call from afar when he was just grown,
took him away from his childhood home;
Soon a wife, a son and an Army Chinook,
made another chapter and another book –
in the life of this boy who would become a man,
who loved us all and was one with the land.
Came Desert Storm, Korea and he’d had enough,
and decided the way to really be tough,
was to have his own business and create his own thing.
So with his brother, they would become kings;
of using their minds and using their hands -
but because of the Clan they remembered the land –
and to Nevada they came home.
Soon a daughter, a son, a new loving wife,
a life at home in Nevada filled with no strife,
but a call from afar and a brand new book;
In the form of a CH-47 Army Chinook.
It would take him away, was his duty to go,
He believed he could make a difference, to show;
that things in life happen, we’re not privy to know,
and what he really knew, we will never know.
He shared with the Clan the things that he could,
But some things will never be truly understood.
We’ll miss him each August when bow hunting comes around.
After all these years, we’ll be one man down.
Hunting the mountains, woods and streams, were – after all,
this childs dreams,
and now, he’s home.
As the casket sits silent among the oak trees,
the stars and stripes covering it blow gently in the breeze.
The soldier lying in it that was born on this land
will be honored and loved forever, by his Clan.
Pat Stewart refused to live inside the box;
He loved this family, the earth and those rocks.
We are proud of you Pat, all the things that you’ve done,
You’re one hell of a husband, father, brother & son.
Rest now for awhile Pat, we’ve got it under control;
After all………we’re Stewarts you know.
